NHS Innovations North

About us

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Department of Health have recognised that more effective management of NHS Intellectual Property is required to maximise benefits in terms of new products and processes for industry as well as improved healthcare.

The NHS Executive published a Health Services Circular (HSC 1008/106) that gave details of the Policy Framework for the: identification, protection, management and exploitation of Intellectual Property (IP) generated by NHS Trusts for the best interests of the NHS and the country as a whole.

Nine Regional Innovation Hubs for the NHS in England have been funded, primarily by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and Office of Science and Technology (OST) via the Public Sector Research Exploitation (PSRE) scheme and the Department of Health (DH), to manage the commercialisation of innovations arising from within the NHS.

The Hubs have a regional focus offering synergy to the purposes of the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), a number of which are funding partners. The NHS Innovations network will provide a mechanism for the NHS to add value to its intellectual property and for NHS Innovation Hubs to provide industry with a clear and comprehensive interface for collaboration.

"NHS Innovations North came to us with the original idea for the Paediatric Chair and their expertise helped us organise clinical trials, production licence agreements and literature for exhibition purposes. The whole process ran very smoothly.”
